Originally developed by Raven and Sledgehammer Games, the game wasn’t initially planned as a part of the Black Ops series. However, disagreements between the two teams led to Activision assigning Treyarch as the lead developer in 2019, with Raven as co-developer. Marketing kicked off in August 2020, employing various strategies like distributing slide projectors to Call of Duty content creators and launching online puzzles for fans to solve. A website showcasing Cold War events was also part of the campaign. A public multiplayer beta was released in October.

Black Ops Cold War garnered favorable reviews upon its release and emerged as the top-selling title of 2020 in the United States. A sequel, rumored to be set during the Gulf War, is anticipated for release in October 2024.
